Fujian is among the first provinces in China to open to the outside world and conduct comprehensive reform experiments. It is also a vital link between China and the world. It has a land area of 121, 400 square kilometers, a sea area of 136,000 square kilometers, with a coastline of 3,324 kilometers, ranking second in the country. Located in the subtropical zone, it enjoys a subtropical marine monsoon climate featuring pleasant climate and spring-like weather year-round. The forest coverage rate of the province is 60.5%, ranking first in the country. The harmless disposal rate of the municipal domestic waste in the province is 54.6%. The total area of garden green space in 23 cities of the province is 16,096 hectares, and the per capita public green space is 65,000 square meters. It has jurisdiction over nine cities: Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Putian, Sanming, Nanping, Longyan and Ningde.

With more than 10 million overseas Chinese, Fujian is the second largest home town of overseas Chinese in China. As the main ancestral home of Taiwan compatriots, it is separated from Taiwan only by the ocean, thus having a unique geographical advantage in communicating with Taiwan. Being adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao and facing Southeast Asia, it has close economic and trade cooperation and exchanges with Hong Kong and Macao. With many ports along its coast, it is very convenient for Fujian to contact with foreign countries. Over the past two decades of reform and opening up, Fujian has become one of the most dynamic provinces in China for its economy. It has the advantages of abundant resources, which are mainly manifested as follows:

I. Land Resources

According to the data of the second national land resource survey, the total land area of Fujian is 12,393,400 hectares, among them there are 10,955,500 hectares of agricultural land, 729,200 hectares of construction land and 708,700 hectares of unused land.

II. Marine Resources

(1) Living marine resources. Fujian has a sea area of 136,000 square kilometers, 12.4% larger than the land area. The area of marine fishing grounds within 200 meters of water depth is 125,100 square kilometers, constituting 4.5% of the total area of marine fishing grounds in China. The area of the shallows is 2,068 square kilometers. There are fishing grounds in eastern Fujian, central Fujian, southern Fujian, outside eastern Fujian and Taiwan shallow. There are more than 2,000 kinds of marine organisms, including more than 200 kinds of economic fish, with the number of shellfish, algae, fish and shrimp species ranking first in China.

Coastal harbour resources. Fujian's continental coastline is 3,752 km long, ranking second in the country. The tortuosity of the coastline is 1:7.01, ranking first in the country. The coastline is dotted with islands, with 1,321 islands larger than 500 square meters (including 98 residential islands), ranking second in the country, and constituting 1/5 of the country. There are 125 large and small bays along the coastline, including 22 deep-water bays in which natural good harbors with deep-water berths above 50,000 tons, such as Dongshan Bay, Xiamen Bay, Meizhou Bay, Xinghua Bay, Luoyuan Bay, Sansha Bay and Shacheng harbor, with great potential for port development.

(2) Coastal mineral resources. Fujian has a complex geological structure along its coastlines. Over 60 mineral resources have been discovered there, of which 21 are of industrial value, with over 300 are mineral product places. The proven reserves of sand, granite and pyrophyllite are among the richest in the country. Quartz sand for decorative granite, kaolin, alunite and arenaceous quartz for glass occupy an important place in the country. The salt industry is rich in natural resources with good production conditions. The total area of the salt field is 110,200 hectares, of which more than 26,700 hectares are shallows suitable for salt. Salt chemical products that can be used on a large scale are magnesium chloride, B medium, gypsum, sodium magnesium salt, iodized salt, etc. Petroleum and natural gas in the Taiwan Strait have also shown good resource potential. The prospects for oil and gas in the three sunken petroleum generation places in the western part of the Strait are promising. It is expected to build oil and gas fields in sunken places such as Xiapeng and Wuqiuyu and uplift place Pengbei, and to survey a total of 290 million tons of oil and gas.

(3) Coastal tourism resources. Fujian boasts many mountains and vast seas with a perfect blend. With favorable subtropical marine climate, multifarious coastal types, beautiful islands and marine erosion landscapes in varied forms, together with numerous religious, cultural, military and historical sites and emerging port cities along the coast, it is thus an ideal tourist resort, including some listed national key scenic spots, that is, Gulang Island, Qingyuan Mountain, Taimu Mountain, Haitan Island, Meizhou Island of national tourism resort and Dongshan Island of "oasis at sea".

(4) Marine energy resources. Fujian has a large coastal geothermal gradient with rich geothermal resources, and there are many geothermal distribution areas with mining value. Coastal wind energy resources are abundant with the available hours as 7,000–8,000 hours. Coastal tidal power generation covers an area of 3,000 square kilometers, the theoretical installed capacity of tidal energy reaches 34,250,000 kilowatts, and the exploitable installed capacity is 10,330,000 kilowatts, constituting 49.2% of and ranking first in the country.

III. Mineral Resources

119 minerals have been found across the province, accounting for 69% of the total number of minerals found in the country. The proven reserves are 99 minerals listed in the provincial non-ordinary Dinas and clay reserve scale, including 1 energy mineral, 25 metal minerals and 73 non-metal minerals. There are 1,561 registered mining areas, among them 58 are large-sized and 127 are medium-sized. Nonmetallic ores are the main types of large and medium-sized mining areas.

IV. Tourism Resources

“Strait tourism” is the most typical theme of Fujian tourism which is featured by the integration of mountains and seas, the same roots of Fujian and Taiwan, strange folk customs and pluralistic religions. Fujian now boasts a number of unique tourism brands, including world cultural and natural heritages Wuyi Mountain, world cultural heritage Fujian earth buildings of Hakka, world natural heritage and world geopark Taining, world geoparks such as Ningde Baishuiyang, Taimu Mountain and Baiyun Mountain, marine garden warm Xiamen, hot spring ancient capital Fuzhou, Maritime Silk Road culture Quanzhou, pilgrimage site of Mazu harmonious Meizhou, the starting point of success brilliant Gutian,the sunrise at coastal volcano, and Magic Pingtan the unicorn in the East China Sea.

Fujian has brilliant and diverse cultural tourism resources, and it has created a number of regional cultures with profound connotations and distinctive characteristics in its long history, including six fine cultures, southern Fujian culture, Hakka culture, Mazu culture, Minyue culture, Zhuzi culture, Hessian culture, and tea culture.

Fujian has multifarious religions with sites of Buddhism, Taoism and Islam widely across the province. Quanzhou is known as the World Religious Museum. Folk beliefs such as Mazu, Chen Jinggu, Baosheng Emperor and Qingshui Master have greatly influenced both sides of the Straits. Fujian Opera, Puxian Opera, Liyuan Opera, Gaojia Opera and Taiwanese opera are five major local operas in Fujian. In addition, there are over 20 kinds of folk operas across the province.

Fujian has abundant products with Fuzhou bodiless lacquerware, Shoushan stone carvings, Dahongpao tea in Wuyi Mountain and Tieguanyin tea in Anxi, Huian shadow carvings, Dehua porcelain, Zhangzhou narcissus, Chinese patent drug pien tze huang, Gutian edible fungi, Putian litchi and longan well-known worldwide. Fujian cuisine is among the eight major cuisines in the country. Fotiaoqiang (Steamed abalone with shark’s fin and fish maw in broth) and braised mactra antiquate with chicken soup are rated as a uniqueness.
